NAFDAC shows readiness to ensure adequate regulation of the practice of veterinary medicine and the use of pesticides

The director general of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii disclosed this to farmers and producers of animal feeds and veterinary medicine practitioners in North-West zone yesterday, stressing that pesticides are very toxic and have the ability to cause poisoning.
The agency’s boss who was represented at the “Awareness Workshop on Safe and Responsible use of Veterinary Medicines, Pesticides and Animal Feeds” by the director of Veterinary Medicine and Allied Product, Dr. Bukar Ali Usman said, safety in the use of pesticides and medicines is a vital aspect of regulatory control that must be addressed.
He however disclosed that the agency created the directorate of veterinary medicine and allied products with a view to effectively control food-borne hazards at every stage of the food chain, “from the stable to table and from farm to the fork”.
According to the NAFDAC DG, “The management of the agency in the past concentrated its efforts on winning the fight against counterfeit, fake and substandard medicines. Having achieved a considerable level of success in this fight, it has become necessary for the agency to focus on other aspects of control of regulated products such as the safe and responsible use of veterinary medicines, pesticides and animal feeds. Safety of medicine should not end with registration only.
