Egypt kills top militant leader in Sinai

Egypt kills top militant leader in SinaiEgyptian armed forces have killed a senior militant commander, involved in deadly attacks on security forces, during an operation in the violence-plagued Sinai Peninsula of the North African country.

According to Press TV, the army said in a statement posted online on Saturday Shahtah Farhan al-Maatqa was killed in a raid in the town of Rafah on the border with the Gaza Strip.
The statement added he "had been involved in attacks that targeted the armed forces and the police" in the Sinai Peninsula.

Last week, a field militant commander, identified as Mohamed Abu Shatiya, was killed during an exchange of fire with Egyptian soldiers south of Rafah.\

On October 7, Egyptian military officials said troops had killed 16 militants during raids against terrorist hideouts in three villages south of the town of Sheikh Zuweid, situated 334 kilometers northeast of the capital Cairo, and in the Mahdiya village near Rafah.
Sinai Peninsula has long been considered as a safe haven for gunmen who use the region as a base for their acts of terror.
